What is a Google Slap? You get penalized when you don't follow Google's guidelines. They will either drop your pagerank down to 0 or ban your site from Google's search engine. Since Google is the biggest search engine, you don't want to violate the guidelines.
You will get the Google Slap if you buy or sell links without the code
If you do not add the nofollow tag, then that person or you are helping each other increase pagerank.
Lets say your site has a pagerank of 5, and the other person has a new page with pagerank of 0, the person pays you to put a link to his site on your site. In that case, you are helping him boost his pagerank even if his site is full of useless junk. Google does not like junk to be in the search engine, especially when it gets to the front page of Google with certain keywords.
The nofollow tag will not boost the person's pagerank, and Google accepts that. Google likes pagerank to go up or down naturally without people buying their way to the top.
Google will also penalize you if you do other things that are shady, such as, hidden links, cloaked scripts that Google search engine crawlers cannot see in your site. Don't do anything suspicious to manipulate the pagerank!
